Programme Overview
The program aims to produce semi-skilled technical personnel in the field of metallurgy to meet the demand in metal-based processing and manufacturing industries such as the iron and steel sectors, shipping, automotive, electronics, metal extraction and even oil and gas industries. Through this program, students will be exposed to various knowledge and skills in the field of metallurgy such as metal processing and manufacturing, metal machining and metal joining through arc, gas, TIG and MIG welding techniques. Students will also learn metal product testing methods using specific equipment such as Universal Testing Machine (UTM), hardness testing equipment (Vicker’s, Brinell and Rockwell), impact testing (Izod and Charpy). The ability to relate test results to the properties and behaviour of metals through the use of state-of-the-art equipment such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) equipment will provide advantages to future metallurgical diploma graduates. Graduates of the Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering have broad employment prospects either in the private or public sector. Graduates of this program are qualified as assistant engineers or technical personnel in industries such as metal processing and manufacturing, automotive, oil and gas, electronics, materials testing, service and maintenance, product control and quality, product design, failure analysis and welding metal. Among the key industry players related to this program are Ann Joo Steel, Antara Steel, Intel, KOMAG, Proton, Perwaja Steel, Produa and Malaysian Smelting Corporation. While in the public sector, graduates can choose to serve in government departments, statutory bodies and research institutions. In addition to entering the field of employment, graduates also have the opportunity to continue their education to the bachelor's degree level in metallurgical engineering or materials engineering offered by universities in or outside the country.

The programme cultivates a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise by developing core technical skills in Polymer Tooling, Manufacturing, & highly specialized competencies in Plastic & Elastomer Processing Technologies. Students gain hands-on expertise in material formulation, performance evaluation, and precise technical modeling through dedicated Laboratory Work & Computer-Aided Drafting. Additionally, the curriculum builds strong analytical capabilities grounded in the fundamental principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and polymer chemistry. This scientific foundation enables students to thoroughly evaluate material properties and directly correlate laboratory data with real-world behaviors and sustainability metrics. To ensure complete readiness for the modern manufacturing environment, students also master critical industrial practices, including occupational safety protocols, quality management standards, and the technological advancements tied to the Industrial Revolution in Polymer Engineering.

To effectively translate theoretical engineering concepts into practical, hands-on expertise, the programme is equipped with a suite of industry-relevant facilities. Students master specialized manufacturing and material handling techniques within dedicated, state-of-the-art environments, including the Plastic & Elastomer Processing Technology Laboratory. Essential material formulation, chemical analysis, and comprehensive behavioral evaluations of polymers are further supported by the Chemical Engineering Laboratory and the Structure & Polymer Properties Laboratory. Finally, to ensure students are fully proficient in modern design, the programme utilizes dedicated Engineering Drawing & Computer-Aided Drafting studios, providing a complete ecosystem for applied polymer sciences.
