Programme Overview

This programme applies the principles of chemical engineering and food technology to prepares undergraduate students for the employment in chemical related industry or specifically into food industries. The principle knowledge in chemical engineering includes principles of chemical process, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, reaction engineering, separation engineering and process controls and dynamics. The exposure to areas of food technology also included such as, food microbiology, food science and biochemistry, food processing and preservation, postharvest technology, food waste management & utilization and quality & safety management in food production. Modern food processing are used to improve the flavour, texture, nutritional value, safety, appearance and overall aesthetic appeal of various foods. Chemical engineering knowledge can be accredited with improving the conversion of raw foodstuffs into safe consumer products of the highest possible quality. Therefore, the program aims to produce chemical engineers who are skilled and have expertise in food technology with great potential to work in the reputable food industry.

Core Skills Developed

The Bachelor of Chemical Engineering Technology (Food Technology) with Honours programme develops graduates with strong technical knowledge and practical competencies in chemical engineering, food processing and preservation, food analysis, food safety and quality, food packaging, and sustainable food production. Students acquire hands-on skills in process operation, analysis and instrumentation, process control, plant design, food product development, waste management and utilisation, and process optimisation. The programme also equips students with the ability to integrate chemical engineering principles with food science and technology in the design, operation, from raw material handling and postharvest technology to product development and commercialisation. In addition, graduates develop competencies in problem-solving, artificial intelligence and digital technologies, communication, teamwork, engineering management, entrepreneurship, safety, and professional ethics, enabling them to contribute effectively to the food processing, food manufacturing, and related chemical industries while promoting innovation, sustainability, food safety, and efficient industrial practices.

Specialized Facilities

The programme is supported by specialized laboratories and facilities for food processing and preservation, food analysis and instrumentation, food microbiology and biochemistry, chemical engineering unit operations and process control and instrumentation. These facilities provide students with practical exposure to laboratory-scale processing, analytical and instrumental techniques, heat and mass transfer operations, separation processes, reaction engineering, process monitoring and control, and food product development. The programme also utilizes computer and simulation facilities to support engineering design, process simulation, data analysis, artificial intelligence applications, and plant design activities. These facilities enable students to gain hands-on experience in applying chemical engineering principles to food processing, safety, quality, waste utilization, and sustainable industrial production.
